How to Get a Domain Name for Your Website
Quick Guide for Affiliates Launching with ASI
If you're getting ready to launch your website on our framework, the first step is securing a domain name with a domain registrar. This is the main part of your website URL. For instance, ASI’s domain is: “AmericanSafetyInstitute,” as you can see in our URL: https://americansafetyinstitute.com. Think of it like a street address for your website. You’ll use it a lot, so it’s important to get this right.
What is a Domain Registrar?
A domain registrar is a company authorized to manage the registration of domain names on the internet. Registrars provide the service of registering, managing, and renewing domain names. Using a reliable registrar ensures your website remains securely linked to your chosen domain without interruptions. We recommend Hover or Namecheap, and provide links to their service below.
Here's a simple walkthrough to help you choose and register your domain.
Step 1: Choose Your Domain Name
Pick a name that is:
- Short and easy to remember
- Related to your business or location (e.g., FloridaDefensiveDriving.com or SafeDriverNY.com)
- Professional—avoid numbers and symbols if possible
Important Note for New York Affiliates Only:
If you are NOT approved by the NY DMV to offer Behind The Wheel driving lessons, your domain name can not include the phrase “driving school.” Using this language without proper authorization may result in non-compliance with NY DMV regulations.
Step 2: Check Availability
Go to a trusted domain registrar (like Hover or Namecheap) and type in your potential domain name to see if it's available.
Tip: If your first-choice domain name is taken, try variations like adding your city, service, or state abbreviation.
Step 3: Register Your Domain
Once you've found an available name that you like:
- Follow the registrar’s steps to purchase the domain (which usually costs around $12–20/year)
- Choose basic privacy protection if offered (to keep your contact info private)
- Turn down the offers for extra services like web hosting, email, or upsells—you just need the domain
Step 4: Send Us Your Domain Info
After purchasing the rights to your domain name, email us:
- The domain name you purchased
- The name of the registrar (e.g., Hover)
- Access credentials (or instructions to grant us access)
We’ll take care of connecting your domain to the YII website we’re building for you.
