How to Build a Social Media Calendar

Keeping up with social media is easier with a plan. A social media calendar is a simple way to organize, save time, and post consistently.

What Is a Social Media Calendar?

A social media calendar is a simple chart, spreadsheet, or digital tool that outlines:

  • What you’ll post
  • When and where you’ll post it
  • What image or video will be included

Tools like Google Sheets, Excel, Notion, or even a notebook can be used to create one. The format doesn’t matter—what matters is that it keeps social content organized and intentional.

How to Build a Social Media Calendar

Step 1: Define the Goal

Before posting anything, decide what you want to achieve.  Examples:

  • Drive more website traffic
  • Promote a course
  • Answer common questions
  • Share helpful information

For ASI affiliates, a goal may be to promote a driving courses or help drivers understand how to reduce license points.

Step 2: Choose the Right Platforms

Start with one to three platforms where your audience is most active.

  • Facebook is useful for general updates and promotions.
  • Instagram works well for images, stories, and short videos.
  • TikTok is effective for quick, informal videos targeting younger audiences.
  • LinkedIn is ideal for professional or partnership-focused messaging.

It's better to be consistent on a few platforms than scattered across many.

Step 3: Plan Different Types of Posts

Variety keeps a social feed interesting. Use a mix of content types:

Step 4: Choose Posting Days

Posting two to three times per week is a good starting point. Consistency is more important than frequency. A simple calendar helps you plan and stick with it.

Step 5: Add Special Dates

Plan ahead for holidays, national observances, or key promotions that relate to the business. These may include:

  • July 4 (Independence Day)
  • National Teen Driver Safety Week
  • ASI course launches

Step 6: Prepare Posts in Advance

Plan a week or even a month ahead saves time and stress. Preparing content in batches allows time to:

  • Write captions or messaging
  • Design or gather visuals
  • Check links, spelling, and formatting

Step 7: Monitor Performance and Adjust

Check out how your posts perform:

  • Likes, comments, or shares
  • Link clicks or page visits
  • Questions or feedback

Use what works and adjust over time.
